The Small Business Innovation Research Program (SBIR) is an intensively competitive program that encourages small businesses to explore their technological potential and profit from commercializing it. By engaging qualified small businesses in America’s R&D field, high-tech innovation is enhanced and entrepreneurial spirit fostered while meeting specific R&D needs. SBIR provides funding to small businesses because this is where innovation flourishes and innovators flourish, yet risk and expense associated with conducting serious R&D efforts often exceeds the means of many small enterprises. By allocating a portion of federal R&D funds specifically to small business, SBIR protects these firms and allows them to compete equally with larger ones. SBIR funds critical startup and development stages and facilitates commercialization – ultimately benefitting the U. S. economy.
Small Business Technology Transfer Program
The Small Business Technology Transfer Program (STTR) is an important small business program that broadens funding opportunities in federal innovation research and development funding programs. At its heart is expanding public/private partnership opportunities between small business and leading nonprofit research institutes. STTR’s main role is fostering innovation necessary for meeting 21st century challenges to science and technology development.
